Daniel Cormer was helping teammates Mo Lawal and Luke Rockhold prepare for their Sept. 10 bouts when he was given the opportunity of a lifetime. Alistair Overeem had dropped out of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, and Cormier was being asked to step in and fight Antonio Silva. For Cormier, taking the fight with Silva was a no-brainer.

“Obviously, I had no reservations. I’m a person who thinks things through, and when I weighed out the positives and negatives, there was no reason for me to not take the fight,” Cormier told Cagewriter.

It’s a leap up in competition for the undefeated Cormier. His last bout was a unanimous decision over journeyman heavyweight Jeff Monson. With Overeem’s withdrawal, the tournament has lost one of its biggest names, but that doesn’t bother Cormier.

It?s been five months since Strikeforce bantamweight Miesha Tate took on Olympic judoka Ronda Rousey after an intense period of trash-talk between the two. Though Tate would ultimately go on to lose the bout, suffering a submission loss in the opening round, it doesn?t look like her spirit has diminished any in the period since then as the former 135-pound champion made clear in a recent interview.

Apparently the 12-3 Tate, who fights Julie Kedzie on August 18, is out to prove she deserves a second shot at Rousey and still has a score to settle with the unbeaten title-holder.

?For the most part fighting is strictly professional for me. But I would like to be the first person to beat Ronda. It would be nice taking her off the pedestal and humbling her,? said Tate in an interview with Punch Drunk Radio. ?Ronda isn?t any better than anyone else and needs to shut her mouth. You can?t have your cake and eat it too. Getting my belt back is appealing, but beating Ronda would be like that for me. It would be that sweet of a fight.?

2009 FIM Women’s World Championship runner-up Larissa Papenmeier can perhaps rightfully claim to be Suzuki’s fastest female motorcycle racer. The petite German runs the number 2 plate on her Teka Suzuki Europe World MX2 RM-Z250 and has taken two podium results from four rounds of the seven in the 2010 contest.

“I had a slow speed crash about one month before the World Championship started at Sevlievo in Bulgaria – the same place that the MX1 and MX2 series’ was beginning. It was a silly fall but I broke a bone in my hand and it was a bit of a setback. I carried on riding, and doing the training that I could before going to Bulgaria. In a way the injury helped with my nerves for the race! Obviously I wanted to be 100%, but I went to the GP with little expectations and wanting just to get points. I scored 6th place which was reasonable in the circumstances.

“We had about a month then before our second round and where we would be joining the boys again at Agueda for the Grand Prix of Portugal. I was getting stronger and carried on my training and found time to finish second behind world champion Steffi Laier in the German Championship. Steffi is currently the fastest rider at the GPs but I know that I – and a good few others – are working as hard as we can to catch up and beat her. Germany is well represented in the world championship in which we are competing for the third time now as it began in 2008, for the two years before that it was a World Cup competition. It means that we have a strong national series and that is only good for the future of women’s racing in our country as more people can see what we are doing and maybe more girls will decide to come and have a go.
